1. Neighborhood Greenways in the University District

Seattle is upgrading seven miles of community streets into Neighborhood Greenways this year, with the U District under active investigation for 2013. Eli Goldberg and Dave Rodgers from University Greenways will present an introduction to what these Neighborhood Greenways are, and how they can help make our neighborhood even better for people who walk or bike. This grassroots presentation will be a first step towards building a shared U-District perspective on identifying the Neighborhood Greenway routes that best support our community’s needs. (In future months we will have a neighborhood walk-through to identify potential improvements.)

With fall here, the tree leaves are starting to fall and will ultimately cause our storm drains to clog and streets to flood. Why not adopt a nearby storm drain and make a commitment to keep it cleaned out and clear year round. We also have a year round problem with trash in our streets/sidewalks/planting strips which just degrades the appearance of our neighborhood. We convinced the UW Greek community to formally adopt their streets through SDOT and they conduct a quarterly clean-up up to NE 50th. Because we are property owners, we can and should take on a little initiative and look beyond the front yard when it comes to trash. So little effort can mean a lot just for peace of mind and appearance, or if selling your home it can impact how the surrounding neighborhood looks to potential buyers.

By now if you recently obtained an annual RPZ 6 parking decal or visitor decal you noticed that the annual cost and information needed by SDOT has changed. UPCC participated in a lengthy review of the RPZ program and two significant changes included an increase in the cost of our passes to better reflect the cost of the program. Also, the requirement for your car to be registered in your name and at an address in University Park was a means to increase on-street parking availability for permanent residents. RPZ 6 is one of two RPZ areas that are renewed annually. In our case the UW continues to offset roughly one half of the actual cost ($65) for the first annual replacement sticker. In other RPZ news, we were notified by SDOT that they could not begin the Gameday parking restriction process for 2011 due to staffing and pending internal program development contrary to what we were led to believe. Since 2012 UW football games will be played at CenturyLink field due to pending renovations at Husky Stadium, we expect RPZ 6 Gameday parking restrictions, if approved, will be implemented before the 2013 UW football season.

SPU is updating its solid waste management plan. The department is considering ways to increase recycling. One idea is to switch to garbage pickup every other week and increase other items that would be recycled such as baby diapers and dog do. To participate in the survey and learn more about the draft plan, go here.

With another school year beginning, University Park has a number of new UW students residing in our community. Typically, we experience an increased number of problem/party rental properties that we must deal with. The UW Incident Prevention Team and Seattle Police are on the alert for these issues, but they need, in most cases, to be called (911). Even if no police response occurs because of higher priority activity, this starts the process for our Community Police Team Officer Brian Thomas, and if students are involved, the UW Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct to become involved. Follow up your 911 call with emails and within a day or so to the UW at cssc@u.washington.edu or call 206-685-6194 and our UPC representative risler@u.washington.edu and provide all the particulars including a specific address if known. As many permanent residents have learned, doing nothing and hoping the problem will go away does not work. “You” are the key to resolving these issues in timely manner.
