Long-time resident Barbara Quinn will conduct two hour architectural walking tour of our neighborhood on Saturday, June 2nd at 10:00 a.m. Her emphasis will be on University Park’s treasure trove of early 20th Century period revival residences. She will examine the landmark worthy houses and the “ordinary” ones as well. You will learn the difference between a barge board and a “kick” roofline and what makes our neighborhood special.

If the Saturday tour fills, Barbara will consider repeating it on Sunday, June 3rd. Please e-mail her at barbara_quinn@q.com to reserve a space. And, yes, it is a free event to celebrate our neighborhood. (Please, no children.)

Most of us in the U-District walk or bike every day — but our streets don’t always make it safe and comfortable. Ever dreamed of a U-District that’s great to walk, bike and live in?

University Greenways has been hard at work with the City to design and build a set of Neighborhood Greenways in our neighborhood — safe, low-cost and stress-free walking and biking corridors connecting us with the places we want to go.

In 2012, the Seattle Department of Transportation will fund or build Greenways in Wallingford, Beacon Hill, Ballard, North Delridge and Greenwood, with plans in 2013 to fund an initial community-driven Greenway in the University District.

We’ve been working closely with UW and community stakeholders to get things started. But we need your help to build broad community consensus around routes, and advocate for their planning and continued funding.

If you’re interested in getting involved in making a U-District where everyone can enjoy walking and bicycling, come join this kick-off community planning event.

At this event, you’ll learn about Neighborhood Greenways in the U-District and city-wide, and have a chance to contribute your ideas to a U-District network.

Date: 14 April 2012

Time: 1-3

Where: Cafe Allegro

AGENDA:

1:00-1:10: Welcome & sign-up
1:10-1:40: Introduction & discussion
1:40-2:30: Community mapmaking workshop
2:30-3:00: Summary/Q & A/next steps

LOCATION:

We’ll be meeting in Cafe Allegro’s “Alley Upstairs” room, accessible via the staircase – just ask an employee for help. Also, please consider buying a drink or pastry to support our continued free use of Allegro’s facility.

1. Neighborhood Greenways in the University District

Seattle is upgrading seven miles of community streets into Neighborhood Greenways this year, with the U District under active investigation for 2013. Eli Goldberg and Dave Rodgers from University Greenways will present an introduction to what these Neighborhood Greenways are, and how they can help make our neighborhood even better for people who walk or bike. This grassroots presentation will be a first step towards building a shared U-District perspective on identifying the Neighborhood Greenway routes that best support our community’s needs. (In future months we will have a neighborhood walk-through to identify potential improvements.)

With fall here, the tree leaves are starting to fall and will ultimately cause our storm drains to clog and streets to flood. Why not adopt a nearby storm drain and make a commitment to keep it cleaned out and clear year round. We also have a year round problem with trash in our streets/sidewalks/planting strips which just degrades the appearance of our neighborhood. We convinced the UW Greek community to formally adopt their streets through SDOT and they conduct a quarterly clean-up up to NE 50th. Because we are property owners, we can and should take on a little initiative and look beyond the front yard when it comes to trash. So little effort can mean a lot just for peace of mind and appearance, or if selling your home it can impact how the surrounding neighborhood looks to potential buyers.

By now if you recently obtained an annual RPZ 6 parking decal or visitor decal you noticed that the annual cost and information needed by SDOT has changed. UPCC participated in a lengthy review of the RPZ program and two significant changes included an increase in the cost of our passes to better reflect the cost of the program. Also, the requirement for your car to be registered in your name and at an address in University Park was a means to increase on-street parking availability for permanent residents. RPZ 6 is one of two RPZ areas that are renewed annually. In our case the UW continues to offset roughly one half of the actual cost ($65) for the first annual replacement sticker. In other RPZ news, we were notified by SDOT that they could not begin the Gameday parking restriction process for 2011 due to staffing and pending internal program development contrary to what we were led to believe. Since 2012 UW football games will be played at CenturyLink field due to pending renovations at Husky Stadium, we expect RPZ 6 Gameday parking restrictions, if approved, will be implemented before the 2013 UW football season.
